Health Care Reform
The River Heights Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted Wed. July 22 to sign a letter addressed to Congress that opposes the legislation under consideration now that would create a government run (public) insurance plan, create employer mandates on businesses particularly small business requiring them to provide coverage for all employees, and major tax increases including imposing an additional “surtax” on high income earners and many small business owners. The Chamber and business community together are eager to work the President and Congress to reform the system, however, not at the expense and on the backs of businesses. The current employer-based system already voluntarily provides health benefits to more than 160 million Americans, and overwhelmingly, employees are satisfied with these benefits and want their employers to continue providing it to them.

Revised State Budget Policy
Rather than asking state policymakers to "spend smart" we are providing an array of spending reduction options, many of which are consistent with the Governor's recommendation. Clearly, it is difficult task however everyone is feeling the pain of this recession - from private sector downsizing and wage and benefit freezes to state and local government spending reductions. This policy was reviewed and recommended by local chambers at the MCCE Annual Meeting in Rochester in February.
